My turn to shine

Shark Lunch
1) “This is not Funny”
2) My audience would be everyone who is living of all ages, shapes, and sizes
3) Although the tone of the image was humorous, I would not make a joke about this. I would use a more pathos-based tone solely because could you imagine a more brutal death than to be viciously eaten up by so easily by sharks because of the effects of global warming?
4) The introduction style would be presenting an overview of what exactly global warming is, and what will happen if it perpetuates.
5) I would love for this article to be published in Times Magazine along with the Washington Post. That way this topic can’t escape anybody!
Greenhouse Effect
6) “Don’t think this wont happen because it will!”
7) Everyone in general
8) The tone would be logos-driven because the effects of greenhouse gases are real and many studies can back it up. You don’t even need studies to prove it, you can just look at a map of the world 60 years ago and now, and then you will believe.
9) The intro style would be in second-person pronoun (you) solely because I want people to read my article and really feel like they need to be the ones to make the change and stop depending on others to do it. If they keep depending on others to make the first move then there will be a stagnate situation because everyone depends on the other.
10) This is such a serious topic that I would love for my article to be published in public school text books and in college texts.

KEY AND FORK
the title would be “Believe it or Not”
my targeted audience would be the elderly crowd because I know they would be more concerned about their health and what surprises the future holds for their children.
the tone of my essay would be humorous only because who would of thought that what you eat can effect greenhouse gas emissions?? And by making light of that, people will never forget the SERIOUSNESS of this topic and walk away with a good laugh then quickly say “my god who would have thought”
I would first start off by defining all the terms I would be using like “greenhouse gas emissions” just to insure that my audience understands precisely what I am talking about. Then I would present an overview of the issue I’m discussing. I want to shed light upon how important this topic is and what could happen.
I would like my essay to appear in the New York Times because almost all elderly people read that.

MOM PLEASE!!!

Dear Mother and Father,
You guys know that I am your biggest fan of all times. There is nothing in the world that I wouldn’t do for you guys, and I know there is nothing in the world that you wouldn’t do for me. That is why I am respectively asking you to consider buying me a Toyota Prius. Just think about how much we would all benefit from getting me this car. I would never be late going to school or commuting anywhere because I could easily hop on the HOV lane without any other passengers in the car besides myself. Not only that, but I would be saving you tons of money on fuel because the Toyota Prius gets 100 miles per gallon. Also, you wouldn’t have to worry about my safety as much because Toyotas are the leading car manufacturer for quality in the world. Toyotas are so convenient they come is all shapes and sizes. They can be roomy yet compact and safe at the same time -(logos)-answers.com-(ethos). Mom I promise you that I will get the weekly groceries, pick up my brothers and sisters from after school activities, and make it home by my curfew. I love you so much and would do anything to have a car that I can move around easily with.

Dear Hassanah Darling,
There was one thing that I agreed with in your letter of consideration which was that I love you very much and would do anything for you. However at this time I can not afford to buy you a car. You completely disregarded the fact that I have seven other children that are in college or need to be put through college. Toyota Priuses cost more than an average car. And since hybrids are a new technology you are prone to more safety hazards of newfound technology, and God knows what could happen. Also, not many mechanics can service the car because the car runs off of an electrical battery, so think of the amount of money it would cost me to fix a car like that. I’m sorry dear but I need to make ends meet not only for you but for the family as well. You say that you will pick up your brothers and sisters and do the grocery shopping, I can assure you that you’d only do it for a couple of weeks then stop. Do you know how I no? Because every one of your brothers and sisters told me the same thing and I fell for it, but not this time. As soon as you get a car you will be with your friends all the time and forget about the family or your family chores. Once you can prove to your father and I that you are worthy of a car then we will take it into consideration. Until then, focus on your school work and get better grades.

Dear Mom and Dad,
Although I highly respect your decision I entreat that you reconsider. You have no idea how serious I am about the promises that I will commit to if given the car. I will even make a deal with you. Once I get the car I will do the weekly grocery shopping and pick up Tom and Jerry from school. If I slack off you can take away my car for as long as you wish and make me go back to taking the bus everyday to school. Mom, I understand that you have a lot of expenses but how about if I worked to help you pay for the car, gas, and future mishaps? I am wholeheartedly willing to do so. I will not be out all the time and if you think I am then I will make a schedule for you so you will never have to worry about my whereabouts. I am even willing to share the car with you and whoever needs the car. Please take me seriously and reconsider. Your consideration is highly appreciated.

Go Figure

This photo won Eddie Adams the 1969 Pulitzer Prize. It represents the reality of the Vietnam War. One glimpse at the photo and one would instantaneously infer that that Nguyen Van Lam (Bay Lap) was the victim here and Loan was the malicious, brutal, and ruthless colonel. In reality Van Lam was the main man behind the killings of many other men and was deserving of what happened to him as cruel as that sounds. Adam realized that this picture doesn’t due justice to Loan and Adam himself said that “photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths” and that is precisely what happened. This photo started to change American public's views on their involvement in the Vietnam War."

Those protesting the Vietnam War
This photograph should be the cover of a magazine to shed light to the truth behind the brutality of the Vietnam War. No matter what the victim did, who has the right to cease a persons life without digging down to core of what really occurred? Where is this victim’s human right? Where is the executer’s sanity?

The US government in support of the Vietnam War
This photo should not be shown in order to maintain the competency of the US government and their erroneous judgment. If this photo is released the citizens will develop a mistrust in their government and that will lead to a lack of trust and hope in the way they govern.

Eddie Adams in 1969
This photo should be posted. This shows the enigmatic side of photography and how, within the stillness of a moment, an image could be interpreted in various ways. Adams is passionate about capturing life and putting real and grave scenarios into perspective. Although some photos may lure be misinterpreted, ultimately they are eye openers and mind boggling.
Nyugen Ngoc Loan (man doing the execution)
This photo should not be published to save Loan face. It’s not fair that he isn’t allowed to verbally speak in this photograph because his action leaves the viewer despising him. This photo brings disgrace to Loan and his family, something I’m sure a photographer wouldn’t think of until after its been publicized.

Nguyen Van Lam's widow (widow of the man being executed)
This photo should not be published because no matter what is going on in the photo, the fact that her husband is deceased earns him right to rest in peace and not have his family worry and deal with the aftermath and controversy that such a photo would cause. For heaven sake this woman’s husband was just shot in the head, she already has to deal with the anguish, pain, and sorrow and on top of that she would have to deal with a lifetime of speculation.

A publisher who must decide if this picture should appear in a fifth grade history book (assume that the photo has now appeared in the newspaper and has won the Pulitzer Prize)
This picture should not appear in a fifth grade history book let alone any elementary or middle school history book. Children have a propensity to emulate a lot of the things that they see on TV, videogames, comic books, and etc. Perhaps a child would see that picture and think that such acts are permissible and want to try it sometime himself. This is not the type of controversy we want our children getting into.

It's Just NOT fair!!

That is so sad. I chose the picture of the pregnant women leaning on the coffin. The fact that Heisler doesn’t even show her face is brilliant because without seeing her face you can still feel the same sorrow, anguish, and compassion that the women herself is feeling. You can tell by the way her head is tilted downward and her hands are touching her unborn son. It is almost as if she is trying to tell her deceased husband “listen to the baby’s heart beat, look what and who you are leaving behind.” If you look closely you can tell that Heisler blurred out the soldier in the back ground, which is considerate of the photographer to keep the main focus on the widowed soon to be mother. For once the attention can be given to the real victims of this war.

The argument that I would entertain would be that it is not fair that troops leave their pregnant wives with a colossal risk of them losing their lives and leaving an unborn child behind. It is just not fair. Who will provide for the pregnant widow in the photo? Who will take care of these widowed wives awaiting their deceased husband’s arrival? I am using the pathos approach so I can touch the people’s hearts. I want people to really comprehend or really genuinely feel for these women. Their husbands are/were attempting to pursue “patriotic” acts and as a result lost their lives, but what does that leave for these deceased soldiers’ families?

Come on now let's be fair!

It’s weird because before knowing a lot about steroids I was completely against it, but after watching that video and reading the articles I’m not AS against it as I use to be. Lets be honest, yes it is not fair that some athletes resort to performance enhancing drugs because it keeps them ahead of the game illegally, but how bout all the other men who have been using it “responsibly” and have seen absolutely ZERO side effects from it? If you ask me, forty years of steroids without any side effects at all seems pretty legit. I absolutely don’t agree with professional athletes or high school athletes using the drugs unless there was a strict rule implementing that everyone would be allowed to use only a certain amount of steroids and that’s that’s. Ideologically that will never happen; someone is bound to break that rule, its human nature. There is no difference between professional athletes using the drug and high school athletes using it as well. After all, how did our professional athletes start their career? If not all of them then most of them started in high school and were either drafted into the NFL/NBA and etcetera or worked their way to it. Different steroid use standards for different sports are absurd because we all know that there will be cheating and misleading. The video fails to address any long term studies done on people who use steroids and the side effects. Most of the instances they provided were positive effects. Ultimately any none athlete would know how to use steroids responsibly, but other than that it is just not fair to professional athletes and high school athletes.

G.I joke?

It is obvious that these two articles are contrary to each other. The first article, Evolving Ideals of Male Body Image as Seen Through Action Toys, is promoting the idea that children are virtually influenced by the conspicuous growth of the muscular male physique through action figures. The authors of this article aren’t necessarily saying that these men are becoming anorexic but “the prevalence of body dissatisfaction is striking”. If we take closes look at GI Joe, Star Wars, Superman, Spiderman, and Batman, we can conclude that over the years there has been a vast alteration in their body sizes and muscular physique. The authors explain that “not only have the figures grown more muscular, but they have developed increasingly sharp muscular definition through the years”. This applies also to women through Playboy magazines and beauty pageants. Over the years these women have become smaller and smaller and thinner and thinner. It’s not going to get any better. This article suggests that one someone grows attached to their idols, whatever or whoever it may be, seeing the image they are portraying will have even the slightest bit of effect on its idolizers.
The second article, G.I Joe’s Big Biceps are Not a Big Deal, suggests that not only do these action figures have no impact on anyone, but it would be considered imbecilic to believe it could have any impact on someone. Through her use of language she makes you feel like an idiot if you really believed that these action figures are altering everyone’s images; “but a plastic doll? Please.” “will this foolishness ever stop?” She suggests that kids can be influenced by REAL people like Mark McGwire and Bill Romanowski and their magnificent muscular, rather intimidating, physique.
Ultimately anything that the media has to offer will trigger, even the slightest bit, of “hmm why don’t I look like that?” especially for women. We look at those BEAUTIFUL celebrities and models on the runway and think “my god I hate her for being so beautiful” then engage in some sort of eating disorder. Although I do not think that action figures have such a massive impact on young children, I can completely understand where the authors would come up with a notion like that. I have five brothers and when they reminisce about those action figures that they use to play with, never have they brought up the idea that they were traumatized by them or intimidated by them. However it is so clear that just like the media pursues excessively thin model bodies and exaggeratedly muscular men, that it has found its way to the action figures. GO FIGURES

Army Leads Young People to The Path of War

It is very clear that the army is desensitizing the young people into loving war and violence. The rhetoric and the visuals displayed on the website were attempts to intrigue and invite viewers to enjoy participating and watching war activities. Many studies have shown that these types of violent games desensitize the players against having or showing any sentiments of care or concern for the human element involved in the violence. The army wants to capitalize on these violent game players and redirect their aggressions toward real live war games in the army. Many studies prove that the average video game player is between the age of 11 and 34; which is exactly the audience that the army wants to recruit. The video game does not have to directly promote violence, but it does leave the player with less of an open heart. My brothers are addicted to "Haylow", and my mother has band that game from the house. Ever since she noticed that the key to the game was to try and kill everyone around you, she couldn't believe that people could actually get a thrill out of that. She was right! All you could hear in the background was "AAAH" "GUN SHOT GUN SHOT" and other disturbing sounds that gave me nightmares, but unfortunately this has become the norm. These types of games have enabled video game players to feel little or no remorse in the sense that they could witness a man being shot right in front of them and not get the shivers. So it's a contradiction to promote peace and diplomacy while at the same time enculturation a whole new generation to be insensitive to violent manslaughter. The army is not so much indoctrinating the ideology of war as it is capitalizing on a new young generation that has already been desensitized to the inhumanity of war and are ready bait to be sucked in to the national war machine.

Running Running Running, Marsha MArsha MArshaa

Wait, I am still laughing. I loved the way there is a clear and distinct difference between runners and joggers. Pearl Izumi obviously leads the reader in becoming a runner because runners solve crimes. Runners are acutely aware of their surroundings. Runners are cool. Runners are portrayed as heroes. Runners, runners, and runners; reminds me of “Marsha Marsha Marsha” from the Brady Bunch and I LOVE it. Pearl Lzumi is ingenious; she shoes you the significance of running through the intelligence and motives of runners. In her efforts of persuasion, she indirectly ridicules joggers for “stopping for a snow cone if the fancy strikes them” because what was the point of the workout if you instantly and effortlessly gain all the calories back? She has convinced me that joggers are inferior to runners and runners shall always prevail in everything. I myself was a jogger, but after reading this ad I have converted to running. The text obviously alludes to pathos because I, a former jogger, am ashamed that I didn’t take it to the next level and be a runner! After readying the ad I feel as if joggers are incompetent, and one should strive to be a runner so they can reap all the benefits that come with being a runner. The Rbk ad was just disturbing. My god, I don’t even want to remember the add let alone by the shoes. What kind of message would you be sending to people by showing a man vomiting on the floor, even though you are trying to get across the opposite of what is portrayed? I think the mind behind the first add would destroy the second ad in comparison. The first ad was clever, witty, and funny. I was inspired to become a runner. The second ad was weird, disturbing, and deterred me from the whole concept of working out.

ProCon Ana?

ProCon Ana?
I am appalled that a website like Pro-ana would even be allowed in the US and was dumbfounded by its rapid popularity. Allowing a website that enables oneself to express desperate emotions and thoughts like “the thinner, the winner”, and “you can never be too rich or too thin” will promote whatever “secret” or message they are trying to conceal. When I read that this website also “invites people who aspire to having eating disorders” to come and express how they feel, I was in utter shock. This website is the antithesis of what kind of message we want our children to perceive. We want our children to feel beautiful in their own shoes, not constantly yearn to mimic the bogus images they see on TV. We want a community who is willing to seek help for their disorders, not flaunt their naiveness and possibly encouraging others to be and do the same. When I think about the courage Claire had, to be the brains behind such a website, a website that enables bulimic and anorexic persons to vent, I couldn’t help but to sympathize with her. She must have really hit her breaking point trying to cope with her disorders before she made “pro-ana”. Clair knew she wasn’t alone. That’s why the website recruited nearly a thousand members within the two-week sign up period. With usernames like “Wannabeboney”, “Neverthinenuf”, and “afraidtolookinthemirrow”, it was obvious that all of the members of the site have one thing in common; they are all discontent with their image and turn to anorexia, bulimia, or both as a remedy. These “disturbed” people have nobody to turn to. They don’t want to go to the doctor because doctors won’t advocate it, and their friends and families “just don’t understand”. Pro-ana is the only source of comfort these helpless people have to turn to where nobody can judge them and, if they want, they can withhold their true identity. Claire clearly states that “this is a website, a place where people who have only their eating disorders can congregate, along with the people who aspire to having eating disorder”. If these people are so diligently unwilling to get help, why would we take away their only savior? Although I have great compassion for the members of the Pro-Ana website, I do think they should seek help, or at least accept it when given the opportunity. Understanding the fact that these people have nobody to turn to, they should be allowed to vent on the website as long as they try to recover. I do not by any means think Pro-ana should be allowed if all the members do is talk about their distress and leave it at that. If someone wants to tell their story it must have a beneficial ending in effort to benefit readers. For example, you can talk about how you are/were discontent with your image and resorted to anorexia/bulimia, but gradually you got help and you are recovering. Also, the website should provide immediate and legitimate contact information for people seeking help. This way anyone who is on the verge of becoming anorexic or bulimic will be inspired to get better and live a healthy life.
